STEM Pathways For Girls Monthly Workshops: Calling all young women, non-binary, and non-gender conforming students in grades 5-8! Ignite your passion for STEM at our upcoming STEM Pathway for Girls Monthly Workshops. Join us for fun hands-on workshops, and incredible insights from women leading the way in science, technology, engineering, and math.


About the Workshop: We’re excited to announce our Polymers, Plastics, and Sustainability Workshop as part of the STEM Pathways for Girls Monthly Workshops! 

This hands-on workshop is perfect for 5th-8th grade students who identify as female, nonbinary, or non-gender-conforming and are eager to explore the fascinating world of polymers and sustainability.

Workshop Details:
When:
Saturday, Feb 8th, 2025
Time: 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Location: Classroom 612, Santa Fe Community College, 6401 Richards Avenue, Santa Fe, NM 87508

Presenter/s and Activities:  Led by Dr. Hannah Dedmon, Polymer Scientist at Sandia National Laboratories, students will:

•Discover what polymers are through interactive demos and learn where they occur in nature.
•Grow their own polymer chains from seaweed.
•Extract polymers from strawberries.
•Create plastics from biobased/plant materials.

Students will also discuss the challenges of recycling plastics and explore eco-friendly alternatives to help improve our world.
