Family Participation

At Taos Charter School we embrace academic rigor, enriching cultural experiences and providing a diversity of paths for all our students. And it takes the whole community to get the best outcomes.

  • There are so many ways to get involved at Taos Charter School — from being a classroom parent to hosting an after school club. Talk to your child’s teacher to find the right fit for you and your time, energy and interests. For broader volunteer efforts, email Friends@TaosCharterSchool.org

  • Committees provide valuable insight and recommendations to the Governing Council — joining a committee is a great way to make a big impact at our school.

    2023 /2024 Committees:

Advisory Committee; Academic Committee; Audit Committee; Finance Committee; Policy Committee; Safe School and Health Committee; Building & Grounds Committee; Election Committee

Committees typically meet once a month — sometimes less often, but never more. We’re looking for one-year commitments from volunteers.

If you’re interested in joining any of the above mentioned committees, or have questions regarding the committees, or even an idea for a new committee not listed above, email Jeremy Jones at jjones@taoscharterschool.org.

  • Donations to Friends of Taos Charter School support programs and facilities.

    More at info here.

  • Taos Charter School is governed by a nine-person Governing Council that includes parents, teachers and community members. Members serve two-year terms and are elected by vote of the parents and staff. All meeting are open to the public. More here.

The Friends of Taos Charter School is our non-profit, parent-driven, volunteer organization that helped to start Taos Charter School. Learn more.

  • Every day is a new opportunity for growth. Attendance ensures your child fully benefits from our curriculum and community. Should they need to be absent, communication helps us provide necessary support.

If you are unable to plan trips during our scheduled breaks, please review our extended leave policy, complete an Extended Learning Experience Form, and bring it into the office at least two weeks in advance. Also, contact your child’s teacher in order to determine what they will miss and how they will make up their assignments.

Please do not plan to be absent or take a trip in April due to required standardized testing.

If your child is absent, please call and leave a message on our attendance line at 575-751-7222 ext. 1. You must report the absence in order for it to be excused. Please bring in a doctor’s note if your child is absent for three days or more. You may wish to consult our guidelines for when to keep a sick child at home.

If your student is tardy, please bring them to the office to sign in. There are no excused tardies and three tardies are the equivalent of one absence.

  • Immunizations:
According to state law, we are required to keep immunization information on file for each students. To learn about required immunization please see the New Mexico Department of Health site. Students who are not immunized must provide a notarized Exemption Form each year before they can attend class. Forms are also available in the office. See Current Forms.

    Medications at School:
Students may not bring any medicine of any kind to school without the knowledge of the teacher and the school nurse. Prescription medication must be in the original container, and we must also have a physician’s statement giving permission and dosage information. Doctors have these forms or you can print this form to take to your doctor.

If you want your child to take over-the-counter (OTC) medications at school, they must also be labeled in a fashion similar to a prescription (date, child’s name, medication name, dose, time to be taken, number in package/bottle, expiration date, etc.). Parents can give permission for their child to be given certain OTC medications that we keep on hand by completing a permission form.

Questions can be sent to our school nurse Guinevere Hernandez at ghernandez@taoscharterschool.org
