New Year’s Greetings to all the young writers, mentors, parents and teachers. I hope this finds you well. Thanks to all of you for the many ways that you have supported our Young Writers Program. You are all at the heart of this endeavour!
Here are some updates about the SOMOS Young Writers Program.
1. YOUNG Writers Salons – Starting January 2018 the salons will take place on the second and fourth Friday of each month from 4-5 p.m. at SOMOS. This schedule works better with the Taos schools calendar.
January Salons will be held on Jan 12 and Jan 26.
***Writer and performer David Perez**** will be at our Young Writers Salon on Jan 26 to help youth prepare for reading their work at the in front of the live audience at the Harwood.
2. Tommy Orange Reading at the Harwood on January 5 – 7 pm
Tommy Orange will read from his first novel There, There (forthcoming Alfred A. Knopf, June 2018),
Tommy Orange was born and raised in Oakland, California. He is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. He teaches in the MFA program at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. (Check out the SOMOS website for more details).
**REMEMBER: For students under 18 years of age, the admission to this event is free.
3. Young Writers Annual Reading at the Harwood: February 1, 2018 at 6 p.m
All young writers are welcome to read short pieces (2-3 poems or short prose pieces – maximum 500 words).
If you would like to read I need you to send me a short bio of about 50 words prior to the event.
4. SOMOS Young Writers Chapbook -Deadline for Submission February 1, 2018
All youth are welcome to submit. We welcome short fiction and non-fiction pieces (max 500 words) and poetry. We are also interested in submissions of art work for the chapbook cover.
**Parents and Mentors – Please encourage youth to participate in the Harwood Reading and submit to our chapbook. These are great opportunities and we look forward to reading everyone’s work!!!
