Greetings from the Taos Charter’s 5th Grade!
I am excited to be here teaching and have been busy planning engaging lessons and projects aligned to the Common Core State Standards.
In English Language Arts, we will begin looking at the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights (CCSS RI.5.4) as we investigate both the issues of human rights and reading informational texts. We will also begin reading Esperanza Rising (RL.5.2). After reading this story we will be applying what we learn to create a Reader’s Theater.
As for Math, we are using a new curriculum this year My Math. This week we will continue exploring the thousandths place value and will have a test on Friday. Additionally, on Fridays we will be using an online math game Ko’s Journey. The game incorporates math problems into a story. The student’s are welcome to use the game at home.
I have created a class website for our class. Please take note of the calendar for homework assignments. I have also set-up an account with Remind.com that will allow me to send out text message homework reminders if you are interested. To join, text @jpinke to 81010.
I look forward to an exciting year. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. The best way to reach me is via email: jpinkerton@taoscharterschool.
